The Oil of Boundaries: Clove Essential Oil

Steam distilled from bud and stem, clove oil is one of my favorite oils to diffuse in the fall and winter. Truth be told, I think the main reason I love clove essential oil is that it smells like my favorite Christmas cookie. I used to eat molasses cookies by the truck load in a past life and having this oil diffusing is almost as good. This oil smells amazing and brings me back to warm fuzzy times. It also is said to help people get over emotional trauma/abuse, build up appropriate defenses/ boundaries, and have the courage to say “no” when needed. It also:

  • Supports a healthy immune system
  • Supports cardiovascular health
  • Promotes circulation
  • Helps to clean teeth and gums while promoting fresh breath
  • Has powerful antioxidant properties
  • Naturally repels insects

Fun and healthy ways to use this oil:

  • Add to lotion for a warming massage
  • Place one drop in 2 ounces of water and gargle for a soothing effect
  • Add a drop to your toothbrush before applying toothpaste
  • After a dental cleaning, apply 1 drop to teeth and gums
  • Diffuse with cinnamon and wild orange for a great fall and winter invigorating scent

Clove oil should be diluted when applied topically with a carrier oil and also diffused with caution. I only add 1 drop in combination with a few other oils (see above) as it can irritate mucus membranes if strong and inhaled directly. We also like to add it to our favorite recipes, including a gluten free “molasses” cookie recipe. 😉 Yum!
